Common questions about the OSI model and this project.
The 7 OSI layers from top to bottom are: Layer 7 (Application) — user-facing services like HTTP, FTP, DNS. Layer 6 (Presentation) — data translation, encryption, compression. Layer 5 (Session) — session management between applications. Layer 4 (Transport) — reliable delivery via TCP or UDP. Layer 3 (Network) — routing and IP addressing. Layer 2 (Data Link) — error-free transfer, Ethernet, MAC addressing. Layer 1 (Physical) — raw bit transmission over cables and fiber optics.
When the page loads, all 7 OSI layers slide in from the left with a staggered animation (each delayed by 0.1s per layer). Clicking any colored layer bar triggers a JavaScript event listener that displays a detailed description of that layer in a fade-in description box below. The clicked layer gets a continuous glow animation to indicate it is selected. Click a different layer to switch the description.
The OSI Model Explorer uses HTML5, Tailwind CSS (loaded via CDN for utility classes like gradient backgrounds and rounded corners), and vanilla JavaScript. It uses CSS keyframe animations (slideIn for entrance, glow for selected layer), CSS transitions for the description fade-in, CSS custom properties (--index) to stagger animation delays, and JavaScript event listeners. No backend or database needed.

Yes. The OSI Model Explorer is an excellent study companion for networking students, Computer Science learners, and anyone studying for certifications like CompTIA Network+, CompTIA A+, CCNA, or CCNP. It makes the abstract OSI model visual and interactive, helping you memorize all 7 layers and their protocols through hands-on exploration rather than passive flashcards.
The OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) model is a conceptual 7-layer framework developed by ISO that describes how data travels across a network from one device to another. It is used by network engineers and developers to troubleshoot network issues, design protocols, and understand how technologies like TCP/IP, HTTP, SSL, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi fit into the networking stack. The OSI model is taught in virtually every computer networking course worldwide.
